FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never been to therapy before. What can I expect?
It's understandable that the prospect of therapy brings up feelings of apprehension, especially if it’s not something you’ve engaged in before. You can expect that I will approach you with warmth, genuine interest, empathy, and respect. I view therapy as a shared process. I will do my best to help you work toward a resolution of your concerns and to reach your therapeutic goals. I may provide recommendations and invite your thoughts on them, but I won't tell you what to do. I believe you have the wisdom to help yourself or your family function better, and my job is to help you realize this and to work through the things getting in the way.
What will happen during the first session?
The first time you meet with me you can expect that I will ask you some questions about what brings you in and your history. I will listen carefully, and by the end of the meeting we should have a shared understanding of the problem. We will also begin to establish treatment goals; however, it may take a couple of sessions to solidify them.
How will I know if you're the right fit for me?
You will probably know whether or not I am a good fit during the first session or two. The fit between therapist and client is arguably the most important factor for you to have a beneficial therapeutic experience. If I am not the therapist for you, I genuinely want to help you find someone else who is. I would be happy to provide referrals to other professionals if needed.
How long are therapy sessions?
Typically, I meet with people for about 50 minutes. I find that sessions tend to be the most productive in this amount of time. I also find that this is about the maximum amount of time children and adolescents can engage meaningfully in therapy. If you are interested in longer sessions, we can certainly arrange for that.
What are your rates?
My hourly rate for all services is $200. Generally, payment is collected at the time of service, unless other arrangements have been made.
Do you accept insurance?
Currently, I am considered an in-network provider with Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, Oxford, Oscar Health, and United/Optum for Colorado-based plans. For all other insurers and clients who do not have Colorado-based insurance plans, I am considered an out-of-network provider. If you have out-of-network benefits and want to submit a claim for reimbursement, I am happy to help you with this. If you plan to submit for out-of-network reimbursement, it is very important that you check with your insurance company to see if the services are going to be reimbursable. It is also important for you to know that if you submit an insurance claim, I will need to give you a psychological diagnosis as insurance companies only reimburse for services that are considered “medically necessary.”
How often will we meet?
Generally, I meet with clients once a week in the beginning. I find that weekly visits are the most helpful for making progress toward therapeutic goals. As time goes on, we may decide to reduce the frequency of your sessions. We might reduce sessions because you have made significant progress and are in a place where you’re just looking to maintain your gains. We might also reduce sessions because you have demonstrated that you can actively work toward your goals without the need for as much help from me.
Do you provide online therapy?
Yes, I use a secure video platform to conduct virtual sessions. I'm not meeting with clients in person at this time.
Can You prescribe medication?
No, I cannot prescribe psychiatric medications. If you would like to have an evaluation to see if medication would be helpful, I can provide a referral for a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. I can also coordinate care with your primary care physician/pediatrician if he/she is already prescribing you a medication.
