Having A Difficult Time Adjusting To Becoming A Mother?
Are you suffering from symptoms of postpartum anxiety or depression? Have you been struggling with body changes brought on by pregnancy and postpartum recovery? Is it challenging for you to connect with your partner or speak to loved ones about how you feel?
Perhaps you’re bothered by memories of your birth experience, unable to shake the feelings of fear or panic. You might feel like no one understands or validates the trauma you experienced.
Maybe you feel guilty for not enjoying motherhood the way you thought you would. Or you might be feeling out of control when it comes to managing or understanding your child’s needs.
Pregnancy, birth, and parenthood can be beautiful, but they can also be incredibly challenging and stressful times in your life. I know how messy and complicated this transition can feel, and I want to help you through it. At Bump and Beyond Therapy, postpartum counseling can help you work toward a place where you feel balanced, at peace, and like yourself again.
Postpartum Mental Health Isn’t Talked About Enough
Motherhood is often described as a joyful and beautiful experience, but if we’re being completely honest, that’s just not the reality for everyone. Pregnancy, birth, and parenthood can feel incredibly overwhelming. Each person’s journey is unique, and if you're struggling, you’re not alone. Maybe you’re:
Missing your old life and having a hard time adjusting to this new role.
Struggling to reconnect with yourself or your identity outside of being a parent.
Spending a lot of time alone with your baby, whether by choice or because leaving the house feels too hard.
Not talking to others about your struggles because they don’t fit the “ideal” image of pregnancy or motherhood.
And on top of these feelings, you may also be dealing with physical symptoms like:
Constant exhaustion or fatigue.
Persistent feelings of sickness or nausea.
Physical pain that has lingered long after delivery.
Frustration or discomfort with the changes to your body.
A sense of withdrawal or numbness, both physically and emotionally.
You might feel alone right now, overwhelmed by thoughts and feelings that don’t seem to make sense. But postpartum therapy can help you heal from deep within, find joy in life, and ease the shame you may feel surrounding your struggles.
Mental Health Concerns During The Perinatal Phase Are Common
Perinatal mental health concerns are more common than you might think, but they often go undiscussed. In fact, according to one particular study, one in ten women experience postpartum depression within a year of giving birth. (1)
Despite how widespread it is, there's still a lot of silence around postpartum depression. The general expectation that motherhood should be a blissful, perfect experience often makes it hard for women to speak openly about the challenges they face. Women often feel alone in their struggles, even though these issues are shared by many.
There Is A Lack Of Support In Our Culture For Pregnant Women And Mothers
After giving birth the focus tends to shift to the baby, leaving little attention to the mother. In many cultures, women are supported and taken care of for an extended period after childbirth. However, in our culture, new mothers are often left to manage everything on their own while their partners leave home to work.
There’s also an unspoken expectation for women to keep up with household responsibilities while caring for a newborn. This can be especially overwhelming for new moms, who are already navigating the physical and emotional challenges that come with hormonal changes and the experience of childbirth.
Having an experienced and understanding postpartum therapist can help you feel less isolated and more validated in your difficult experiences while providing you with the right tools so you can process your experience and heal.
Postpartum Therapy Can Help You Reconnect With Yourself And Embrace A Fulfilling Life
Postpartum Therapy provides women with a safe space to openly express their feelings and feel truly heard and accepted. It offers an opportunity to learn valuable skills for navigating challenges while fostering emotional healing through open, non-judgmental conversation.
By exploring their thoughts and feelings, mothers can gain insight into how these emotions might be contributing to depression, anxiety, and other struggles, ultimately helping them feel better and more equipped to cope.
Through postpartum counseling, you can experience a change for the better.
The Bump And Beyond Therapy Approach To Postpartum Counseling
When you begin sessions, I’ll focus on addressing your immediate concerns and day-to-day needs, ensuring you feel safe and supported from the start. In postpartum therapy, we use a variety of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness techniques, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors while building skills for self-reflection and monitoring your emotional patterns. Through CBT, we can also challenge maladaptive thoughts—poking holes in them and ultimately finding empowerment in how we relate to our thinking.
EMDR Therapy is particularly helpful for processing birth trauma or any other traumatic experiences related to pregnancy and childbirth. It helps you move past painful memories, reducing their emotional intensity and allowing them to feel like less of a trigger. Over time, these memories become easier to bear, allowing you to feel less "stuck" and more in control.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you develop psychological flexibility by encouraging acceptance of difficult emotions while focusing on values-based actions. This approach fosters mindfulness and self-compassion, helping you adapt to the new challenges of parenthood.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), on the other hand, emphasizes emotional regulation and distress tolerance. With DBT you can manage mood swings, navigate relationship changes, and respond calmly to stressful situations that may arise during the postpartum period.
I work closely with you to ensure we have a shared understanding of the issues at hand, collaboratively exploring what may be contributing to your struggles. Depending on your needs, you will grow by learning how to increase awareness of the unhelpful thoughts that hold you back and skills to develop healthy patterns to process any traumatic experiences that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Though all that you’re going through right now is overwhelming and frustrating—you are not alone, you are not to blame and with help, you will be well.
Maybe You Are Considering Postpartum Therapy But Still Have A Few Concerns…
What if I’m worried about being judged for seeing a therapist?
There’s absolutely no shame in seeking help. Many mothers hesitate to reach out because they fear it means something is wrong with them or that they aren’t good enough. But in reality, seeking support is a proactive and positive step.
It shows that you’re committed to being the best version of yourself, both as an individual and a parent. Struggling with mental health challenges is common, and you’re not alone in needing help. Taking the time to care for your well-being is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family.
I have a packed schedule and don’t feel like I have enough time to commit to therapy sessions.
It’s completely understandable that, as a parent, your time feels limited. Finding even an hour a week for yourself can seem impossible. However, therapy is an investment in your well-being that pays off in countless ways. I offer online therapy, which makes it much more convenient to fit into your life. You don’t have to worry about arranging childcare or leaving the house—therapy can happen from the comfort of your own home, even while caring for your baby.
I should be able to get over my anxiety on my own.
Even if you’re tired of living with anxiety, you might be one of these people who put off seeking therapy because of the stigma. But there’s nothing shameful about working with a therapist. On the other hand, trying to “tough it out” and grapple with anxiety on your own can prolong your suffering. With the right treatment, you’ll be able to learn the skills to manage your symptoms and finally feel at ease… and at peace.
